Empowered Embodied: Sexual Trauma-Informed Pilates Workshop for Survivors
Time & Location
About the Event
This workshop is an introduction to incorporating Pilates into a sexual trauma survivor’s life and healing process. Its purpose is to empower survivors with community support, knowledge about the effect trauma may have on their health, tools to assist in managing those effects, and guidance on how to use Pilates to promote their physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.
We’d love to say, “Anyone!” However, this trauma-informed workshop is for female participants only please. Empowered Embodied was developed for survivors of sexual assault—especially those who feel their recovery is not progressing. Though survivors are given priority, we welcome the presence of survivor-support providers (friends, family, therapists), space provided.
For a survivor, the post-sexual trauma experience is typically one of overwhelm. It is not clear what to do, who to tell, where to go—mental clarity is one of many faculties that sexual trauma impairs in survivors. We can end up in the wrong therapy or in no therapy for years, living a life of fear and confusion.
Pilates Can Help:
Incorporating Pilates into a sexual trauma survivor’s life and healing process can help regulate their nervous system, thereby reducing overwhelm and revealing needed clarity. Those attending the Empowered Embodied workshop will be offered:
• An overview of the body’s role in resolving sexual trauma.
• Pilates-based practices to regulate their autonomic nervous system (ANS).
• Guidance on how to identify the state of one’s ANS using postural and physiological indicators.
• Information on the history and evolution of Pilates, and why it is inherently a trauma- informed practice.
• Mindfulness practices that can be used anywhere, including during exercise.
• Handouts, including: humanitarian, self- affirmations; criteria to identify a fitness class or body-worker whose services are optimal for an SA survivor’s needs; and additional trauma- informed resources.
Yoga mats will be provided, but bringing one’s own to double-up is recommended as mat Pilates is meant to be done on a mat thicker than a yoga mat.
This workshop will be taught by Emilie Miller of PilatesEmbodied . This is a Trauma-Informed Workshop and will reflect the six elements that comprise trauma-informed services: Safety, Trust, Choice + Control, Collaboration, Empowerment, and Cultural Relevance.
Emilie Miller, of PilatesEmbodied, is a decade-long Pilates instructor with certifications in Yamuna Body Rolling® (myofascial release), TRX Suspension Training, Yoga for Trauma (Y4T), and an MA in Integrative Health Studies/Coaching. She was called to Pilates soon after surviving being raped. What has developed into Sexual-Trauma Informed Pilates (STIP) is meant to be accessible to survivors everywhere. To grow a network of studios where SA survivors feel safe during their workout, assured that if triggered they will be consciously cared for, and confidently empowered upon the session’s end, Emilie has created an STIP training curriculum for instructors. Emilie is a volunteer SART sexual assault victim advocate, passionate about bystander intervention education, and innately committed to reducing human rights violations.
